like “Charlie Brown,” this one is quick, to the point, and serves its intended purpose: a vehicle for me to insert my harmonica. that sounds dirty. I felt bad about rhyming “overthrown” with “thrown” in the chorus, but then I realized it was an internal rhyme and that was okay. this song is mean, so I won’t tell you what it’s about. I was so proud of myself when I wrote the backing vocal part that freeman sings, though. Much tweakage had to be performed when I decided this song had to be under three minutes. Tweakage success!
silence is a blanket so you grow warm beneath your lies
storms are brewing by the window, you dare not go outside
but we try to coerce you
and we’d die to convince you
that your life just will not do all the time
your eyes will open slowly like an ear to a new tune
lemon light from the blinds is shedding stripes around your room
and we know you’d believe us
if you’d go ahead and think
but below all your covers, you don’t know
so if you don’t stay careful
and if you don’t break free
you’ll be overthrown in a coup thrown by your aristocracy
