Baltimore
based on a true story that I refuse to reveal to you, Baltimore is, arrangement-wise, a pretty big departure from the rest of the CD and the STD stuff as well. I wanted to do better synth-drums for it, but the pre-fab YAMAHA loop worked alright. I’m a HUGE fan of the two tom hits at the very beginning. It takes place at a train station as so many songs do, but the story upon which this is based ALSO takes place at one. Baltimore is the setting for two reasons: 1) Baltimore has a good ring to it (and lots of rhymes, even though I don’t rhyme it at all) and 2) people just plain forget about Baltimore. It took me like ten minutes today to realize that DC has no baseball team; the closest team to us is the Orioles. Oh, right, them.
just outside of Baltimore I lied
I told myself our paths would cross again
but as you disembarked I caught you in your stride
like I summoned you from my imagination
and all I need is another heartbeat
if loneliness is purity, please come pollute my time
if all I need is vanity, I guess I’ll get in line
in my mind I know so many words
but I dare not speak, the train will drown us out
no sun, no blooms, no stupid singing birds
i’d talk to you but I can’t bring myself to shout
and all I’ll get is an evening silhouette
if everything is overcast, the sun won’t shadow you
if we cannot make this last, we’ll have something to do
just outside of Baltimore I tried
to keep my coat from shimmering with snow
I held the door but I kept my words inside
I saw you out and wondered where you’d go
so through the door, get me out of Baltimore
